Whales and Dolphins of Newfoundland and Labrador

We've purchased this guide ahead of our June 2016 trip to Newfoundland and Labrador. We've made five trips to Newfoundland so far and have seen whales on three of the trips.

Humpback, Whales and Dolphins of Newfoundland and Labrador

19 different whales and dolphins that you can see in Newfoundland are covered by the book. They are divided into two categories:

Seeing a whale can be the highlite of your trip. You just get fleeting glances and you have to anticipate where they are going to breach. They are tough to photograph and difficult to identify. I try to forget about the camera and just enjoy the moment.

The book explains what characteristics you should be looking for if you'd like to identify the whale.

Tips, Where to See Whales

Bonne Bay in Gros Morne National Park is as good a place as any. We saw humbacks on the Bonne Bay Boat Tour. We also had a whale swim right behind our trailer while we were camping in Shoal Brook. We saw minke whales in the harbour at St. Anthony on the iceberg boat tour by Northland Discover Tours. At King's Point on Green Bay we watched whales from our balcony as we had coffee in the morning.

We've purchased most of these books ourselves. It's nice to have field guides so you can identify what you are seeing when you are out on a hike. Please help support Bob's Newfoundland by using the links below for book purchases. We've written book reviews for the following:
